HESS Opinions: Participatory Digital eARth Twin Hydrology systems (DARTHs) for everyone – a blueprint for hydrologists

چکیده
Abstract. The “Digital Earth” (DE) metaphor is very useful for both end users and hydrological modelers (i.e., the coders). In this opinion paper, we analyze different categories of models with view making them part Digital eARth Twin Hydrology systems (DARTHs). We stress idea that DARTHs are not models, rather they an appropriate infrastructure hosts (certain types of) provides some basic services connecting to input data. also argue a modeling-by-component strategy right one accomplishing requirements DE. Five technological steps envisioned move from current state art modeling. step 1, decomposed into interacting modules with, instance, agnostic parts dealing inputs outputs separated model-specific contain algorithms. 2 4, software layers added gain transparent model execution in cloud, independently hardware operating system computer, without human intervention. Finally, 5 allows be selected as if were interchangeable others giving deceptive answers. This includes use hypothesis testing, inclusion error estimates, adoption literate programming guidelines obtain informative clean code. urgency open source supported here light open-science movement its ideas. Therefore, it argued must promote new participatory way performing science, which researchers can contribute cooperatively characterize control outcomes various territories. three enabling technologies discussed context – Earth observations (EOs), high-performance computing (HPC) machine learning (ML) well how these integrated overall boost research activity scientists generate knowledge.

HESS Opinions “Catchments as meta-organisms – a new blueprint for hydrological modelling”
Catchment-scale hydrological models frequently miss essential characteristics of what determines the functioning of catchments. The most important active agent in catchments is the ecosystem. It manipulates and partitions moisture in a way that supports the essential functions of survival and productivity: infiltration of water, retention of moisture, mobilization and retention of nutrients, an...
متن کاملHESS Opinions: Repeatable research: what hydrologists can learn from the Duke cancer research scandal
In the past decade, difficulties encountered in reproducing the results of a cancer study at Duke University resulted in a scandal and an investigation which concluded that tools used for data management, analysis, and modeling were inappropriate for the documentation of the study, let alone the reproduction of the results. New protocols were developed which require that data analysis and model...

HESS Opinions “Climate, hydrology, energy, water: recognizing uncertainty and seeking sustainability”
Since 1990 extensive funds have been spent on research in climate change. Although Earth Sciences, including climatology and hydrology, have benefited significantly, progress has proved incommensurate with the effort and funds, perhaps because these disciplines were perceived as “tools” subservient to the needs of the cli5 mate change enterprise rather than autonomous sciences. At the same time...
متن کاملA Microcomputer-Based Simulator for Digital Control Systems
A microcomputer-based simulator for digital control systems is proposed. The proposed simulator is a hybrid system in which the plant is simulated by conventional method of analog computers and other parts of the system including generation of input signal is performed digitally, using a Z-80 based microcomputer. To overcome the difficulty of programming in assembly language, and at the same ti...
